Environmental Management Services (EMS)

The purpose of the EMS is to assist in ensuring the sustainability of projects or plans, in terms of environmental and socio-economic criteria, by providing a range of environmental services that can be applied at a strategic regional level or a site-specific scale.

Available services include:

  • Water Use Licence Application (WULA) Process (Section 21 and 40 of the National Water Act, 1998, (Act No. 36 of 1998)):

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Process (Section 24 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998)).
    • Environmental Screening Assessment.
    • Basic Assessment Process; and
    • Scoping and Full Environmental Impact Assessment Process.
  • Environmental Management Programme Reports (EMPr) (Section 24 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998).
  • Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Auditing (ECO) (Section 24 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998).

  • Public Participation Process (Chapter 6 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 as amended).
  • Management of environmental Specialists (Heritage and Palaeontological, Wetland, Ecological, Agriculture, Floodline, Geo-hydrological, geotechnical specialists, etc.
  • Waste Management Licence Application process (Section 24 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) and National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008)).
  • Mining Permits, Rights and Licence Applications (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act NO. 28 of 2002)).
  • Resource Management Plans (Section 113 of the National Water Act, 1998, (Act No. 36 of 1998)).
